Handa Canal & Kura no Machi Storehouses District
A city that retains the impressive and atmospheric townscape of the Edo Period and the Meiji Era (17th–19th century).
In Handa City, Aichi Prefecture, the brewing of sake, vinegar and other fermented food stock is a thriving industry, and the blackboard-enclosed storehouses that represent this sector of the food market are still active along the Handa Canal.
The canal, opened in the Edo Period, carried these specialties, such as sake, vinegar, and cotton from the Chita Peninsula, to Edo (current Tokyo) and Kamigata (nowadays Kyoto and Osaka). Wealthy brewery warehouses and merchant mansions from the early Meiji Era line the canal, preserving a distinctive image of those days.
Is this a scene from a movie? Are we traveling in a time machine?
The city of Handa, which preserves the culture of the Edo Period and the Meiji Era, has walking trails that are perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Starting from Handa Station, where the oldest railway bridge in Japan, built in 1910, still stands, you can visit places such as the MIZKAN Museum, the only comprehensive vinegar museum in Japan; the Oguri Family’s House, a heritage left by the wealthiest merchant in the city; Kunizakari Sake Culture Museum, which offers hands-on experience of traditional sake making inherited from the Edo Period (1603-1867); the Handa Red Brick Building, one of the largest brick buildings in Japan; and the Former House of the Nakano Family, a Western-style building built in the Meiji Era (1868-1912). Strolling around the city is like traveling back in time!
